TRANE AT 100: MORE THAN A CONCERT
TRANE AT 100 is an immersive centennial journey into the music, spirit and ever-expanding world of John Coltrane.
The experience opens theatrically inside a Detroit jazz club in 1951. Actors Robert J. Carmack and Mechelle LaChaux portray two strangers who meet near the bandstand and begin talking about a young jazz saxophonist working with Dizzy Gillespie. “John who?” Moments later, the band erupts into We Love To Boogie, and the journey is underway.
From those early beginnings, TRANE AT 100 moves through the revolutionary body of work that followed, from Giant Steps and the Atlantic years to My Favorite Things, Equinox, Afro Blue, the Duke Ellington and Johnny Hartman collaborations of the Impulse! years.
But this is no greatest-hits parade.
Award-winning producer, actor, and narrator Robert J. Carmack weaves concise storytelling, dramatic moments and original poetry throughout the music, illuminating Coltrane’s creative ecosystem and the people, sounds and ideas surrounding his extraordinary evolution.
An exceptional ensemble brings the music alive, featuring saxophonist Dr. Teodross Avery, bassist and music director Kevin O’Neal, pianist Robert Turner, drummer Robert Miller, bass clarinetist/flutist Pablo Cologero, and vocalist James Love.
The experience also extends beyond the bandstand with original Coltrane-themed artwork by artist WanJean on display, adding a visual dimension to an afternoon where jazz, theater, poetry, history and art converge.
Before the final note disappears, Carmack and LaChaux return for the closing scene, bringing the theatrical journey full circle.
TRANE AT 100 isn’t simply about hearing John Coltrane’s music. It’s about stepping inside his world.
