Grateful Dead drummer, Bill Kreutzmann, Papa Mali, Matt Hubbard and Reed Mathis are the original four founding members of the now legendary, 7 Walkers. After their formation in 2009, Kreutzmann soon introduced Papa Mali to Robert Hunter and they began writing the songs that make up their self-titled 2010 debut album. Upon release, it immediately topped the Relix Jamband chart and stayed at the number one spot, for the next four months. It has been praised as the “best post-Garcia record, by any member of the Dead” by none other than Blair Jackson, official biographer of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead.
Since the 7 Walkers quit touring in 2013 (and Kreutzmann took his rightful place alongside Phil, Bobby and Mickey, to first participate in the 2015 Fare Thee Well reunion shows, then go on, to form Dead and Co), the other various members have been in several, high-profile, Dead-related spin offs - Voodoo Dead, Billy and the Kids, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir Tour, Dead Reckoning, Mickey Hart Band, The Rambling Roses and more.
Rounding out the newly reformed quartet, is Wally Ingram, who besides having a long resume that includes Sheryl Crow, Jackson Browne and many others, played alongside Kreutzmann, on many of 7 Walkers tour dates (as well as a few of the aforementioned spin-off acts) and now takes the throne, as the band’s main drummer.
Fans can expect a mix of selections from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia songbook and of course, the 7 Walkers songs, some of which they haven’t performed live, in almost a decade - plus a few surprises.
Walking In the Sky, takes their name from the signature song ‘7 Walkers’, written by Robert Hunter and Papa Mali.
“7 Walkers, walking in the sky.
7 Walkers, watching from on high.
7 Walkers, offering protection.
7 Walkers, looking down from heaven.”
